Yvonne,

First, anyone doing Atkins right (by the book) should be getting plenty of veggies for fiber. People who have never read the book usually do it wrong (going by what the media says and following that). I never had any problem getting enough fiber when following Atkins.

This nut eater needs to make sure she's getting the minimum veggie requirement on Atkins. Even in Induction you should be getting 5 servings a day. You are allowed 20g net carbs and it's recommended to get at least 12 of those grams from low-carb, high fiber veggies. Bewteen the veggies and some nuts there should be no problem getting the 20g+ of fiber recommended by people such as you.

Second point - Atkins is not all about red meat! It's about healthy eating from all food groups (including starches in moderation). It's not just about bacon and beef, but also chicken, turkey, and any other meat you fancy. It's about veggies and berries and even some fruits, and dairy in moderation.

We don't need carbs to survive and thrive as humans and to this day I eat a fairly low-carb diet consisting of meat, veggies, and dairy.

I am a clinical nutritionist. In response to the
person who said she eats Atkins and combats the lack of fiber with nuts, I think you are forgetting that lots of red meats are considered a possible risk for colon cancer. It really is best to eat ALL the food
groups in moderation, rather than avoiding one food group altogether.

My first hi-pro low-carb diet was in the 1970's. I've been eating mostly that way since. To combat the digestive problems, I've found that one-half to one cupful of mixed roasted nuts keeps my system happy. I DO treat myself occasionally to an ice cream or a cookie, but that is only a couple of times a month. I'd rather eat meat than anything, so it really works for me!

Being a professional dieter, not a nutritionist, I can only comment on the effect of the Atkins verus my lastest "fiber up, slim down" adventure. When first starting Atkins, I crave everything with carbs and that much protein is overwhelming. I think it must be great for meat lovers. However, with high fiber I get so many more healthy choices and it doesn't seem drastic. Granted, changes have to be made like brown bread vs: white bread, and the same with rice. No, I'm not a diabetic, but my mother is, so I do know the difficulty with that situation. But my high fiber diet has worked great for ME. I can't get all the food down and I've lost the weight and feel really good about all the choices.

It takes quite awhile to catch up to the 60's. Now if only someone could explain the footprint of a lawn. Bamboo is a grass, and grass too.

Lia,

Where do you get your info? From those that make lots of money off the people that are suffering from many diseases such as Type II Diabtes. The reason there are so many young people and adults with Type II diabetes is because of all the junk we in America eat. Carbs are our mainstay. Not fresh vegi's, fruit or meat. It's rice, cereals, processed foods, potatoe anything filling. Most of these foods are full of carbs which breaks down to sugar. The human body cannot process all the sugars(carbs)that we eat in a day. I am a believer of Atkins I am also a Type I Diabetic since my early teens it is not a disease you want. I have seen many Type II diabetics go from insulin dependant to no insulin from high cholesterol to average cholesterol because of the Atkis diet the theory alone makes sense. It always angers me to see the Food Pyramid that was published many years ago with carbs as a major staple. There are many in the Medical Profession that know the Atkins Diet is healthy. If you follow the diet the way Dr Atkins intended you will begin to feel healthier almost immediately.

derr! Yeh we all know that fruit, veg and whole grains are healthy and common sense dictates you should have more, do exercise and drink more water.....BUT
in the real world the majority do not follow a permanent healthy eating plan and there isn´t always the option. And many are enjoy the fullness and variety of foods to experience.

As a big foodie I explore all kinds of foods and have times when I eat to excess and really enjoy the blowout. What I do 2 or 3 times a year is cut the carbs which controls blood sugar which controls cravings and helps me cut the alcohol too. I stop my obsession with food for a few weeks a year and maintain my weight. I go to the gym regularly and try and drink a lot of water but enjoy food and drink to the max for most of the year. Life is for living and enjoying. As long as you have a good balanced diet and don´t eat too many processed copnvenience foods (which I don¨t I cook fresh and eat in good restaurants) enjoy food....but a few weeks of cutting carbs is good for keeping the waistline in check!! My weight is between 80 and 90 kilos at 6 ft2" and has been for years. I go upto 90 kilos and after 2 or 3 weeks of low carbs get back down to 80! Atkins is great!
