Weight, weight, diet, diet, BMI Blah Blah.
What an obsession. Stop letting others do this to you. TV, magazines, news shows, blogs.
Got rid of my scale years ago.
The only way I will ever get to the ideal weight now is to quit my desk job and do manual labor until I die. I would love to but it does not pay the rent.

I always have this problem with trying to figure out what's really a healthy weight for me. I am a late-twenties female, nearly 5'10" and weigh between 160-165 depending on the time of month. I seem to have a slim bone structure, but I am very curvy (I have a 32" waist, but wear a G cup bra.)
I'm not sure how all this applies to me, or what is healthy fat and what is a risk factor.

A pound of muscle weighs more than a pound of fat that is why more "muscular" individuals may be considered overweight.

Congrats on your success; keep up the great work! Wow! 30 surgeries? That is a lot for one to go through. Believe in yourself no matter what others may say about you. I think changing physicians is a smart move.

The biggest problems with the BMI calculation are (1) it does not take into account the amount of muscle that an athletic person carries and (2) it has no way to accommodate for the size of your frame. An average woman’s wrist is 7″ to 7-1/2″ in diameter - mine is 8-1/2″. The rest of my skeleton follows suit; wide shoulders, wide hips, large waist measurement, larger bone structure overall. I have a large (or heavy) frame. A larger skeleton simply weighs more than the average skeleton.

Between the 2, I am classified as obese and doctors have informed me of that fact. OK, I admit I’m overweight, but they suggest I lose an impossible amount of weight without really looking at me.

It’s a GOOD thing that researchers are currently developing a different way to determine a healthy weight that takes more parameters into account.

Well your BMI is 29.28, try to lower to around 25 at least.

Excerpt of a great article by Lindsay Woodland,
How to Calculate your BMI (Body Mass Index)

BMI math
Your BMI is a simple calculation, equal to your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared. In June 1998, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute published its "Clinical Guidelines on the Identification, Evaluation and Treatment of Overweight and Obesity in s." It labeled various BMI ranges, from underweight (BMI less than 20) to morbidly obese (BMI greater than 35). Those with a BMI over 25 are considered "overweight" and are thought to be at higher risk for cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease.
********
How to test yourself
Measure your hips and your waist, and divide your waist measurement by your hip measurement. For women, the ratio of waist to hips should be less than .85 (.7 is optimal, both for health and aesthetic reasons); for men, .9 is optimal. This means that a woman with a 30 inch waist would have an optimal hip measurement of approximately 42-43 inches. Additionally, waist measurement alone plays a factor. A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine states that a waist measurement greater than 47 inches for men or 39 inches for women almost doubles the risk of from heart disease.
What does this mean for you?
Unfortunately, this news does not mean that you can ignore your BMI entirely, nor does it mean that having plenty of "junk in your trunk" means that you're not at risk for heart disease. Doctors continue to recommend that people aim for a BMI in the normal (BMI 20-25) range, although they readily admit that some may not be able to get their weight that low, even with proper diet and exercise. For those with slightly above normal BMI or normal BMI but a high body fat percentage, resistance training is recommended to build muscle and decrease overall body fat percentage. People with high waist-to-hip ratios are encouraged to eat a high-fiber diet and strive to lower their weight and body fat percentage. Those with a BMI over 40 are considered extremely high risk and are often told to consider bariatric surgery to reduce their weight and risk of heart disease.
