Dear Natasha:
Once I replace the teddy bear fat with muscle (another year) I will celebrate by eating pizza. Will I gain weight? Nope. When I have ditched the fluffy body fat and packed on muscle, my metabolism will have speeded up and I will be able to consume bread or pizza twice a week. Hot whole wheat artisan bread with butter!! Yum. I can hardly wait. One more year. Meanwhile, I'm off to the gym to add some muscle. I love the elliptical- I can create high speed intervals followed by slow periods of recovery. I burn off 100 calories then head for the machines. Then back to the elliptical. Repeat. Best wishes, Suzi Mai

Dear Brook:
Yes, you will feel crabby and deprived as you ditch the carbs. You will fantasize about pizza. BUT if you work out two hours per day 7x week, the cravings will be gone in a month. Try water aerobics in the morning and the gym in the afternoon. Why not at home? Because the personal trainers at the YMCA are free. FREE!! Plus they are kind and supportive. For $25 they will create a workout program for you-- not $25 per year; $25 for life. That is the cost of the key that you put in the machines. I used to pull down 20 lbs of weights and break a sweat. That was last June. Now I pull down 60 lbs of weight. I do machine ab crunches at 60 lbs also. I began at 20 lbs. One day you will wake up and say "I like going to the gym." It happened to me. It will happen to you. I had avoided the gym for 66 years. Now I'm a fan. I enjoy seeing the same people and saying 'hi'. I love the YMCA because they love everyone, even people like me with the fat rolls and muffin tops. I would feel shy about going to a commercial gym. The Y cheers me on. Best wishes, Suzi Mai

If you want to drop a few pounds (not necessarily to be skinnier but to be healthier) the PWM Program can help. You will get a weight loss coach and can eat your own food. It’s an effective and affordable program to help you reach your ideal weight, whether it’s 5 pounds, 50 pounds or more. You set the goal, PWM will help you get there.

Andrea,

I did read the article. Yes, you can eat anything in the right proportions and be healthy, including candy bars and potato chips. However, corn has an impact on the body similar to those foods and should be eating in the same proportions.

I like most people in the US have grown up in a culture where corn, potato and wheat products have been mass marketed to me since I was a child because they are cheep calories and rapidly increase blood sugar.

Its irresponsible for a health related board to recommend corn when the average American is eating 10-15 times more than they should.

Your right I have done more than eliminated corn. I eliminated corn, potatoes and refined wheat and sugars. That's it!!!

I am a 46 year old woman who is about 95 lbs. overweight. I come from a large family of overweight people. I have osteoarthritis in my knees, hips and now in my lower back. I absolutely must lose weight. I have tried just about every diet out there, but to no avail. My problem - I am a very picky eater. Diets like Weight Watchers have meals with onions, peppers and mushrooms - all of which I hate. I like peppers raw, but not cooked. I like most fruit, but once I start on something sweet, its all I want to eat!! I am totally addicted to sweet things, starchy things and all the things that are 'tasty' to eat. I like some veggies, but the ones I like are not the best for me to be eating. I am a borderline diabetic and if I don't start behaving I'm going to end up diabetic. I hate my body and the way I look. I'm not comfortable and I have a job that requires me to sit all day. Do you have any suggestions or places I can look on online??

You are AMAZING, girl! I think it's great that you're giving the advice you are because you're right, YOU KNOW! That's like me, I'm a size 24 but I'm studying to become a certified personal trainer. I KNOW what it's like to be big and uncomfortable exercising so I can empathize and accomodate those feelings! Keep working it, girl... you are an inspiration!

I blog about my weight struggles... in fact, it's called "Confessions of a pleasingly plump single Mommie" which pretty much sums it up. I have a lot of weight to lose and on top of it, I'm a single mom of a very active 4 year old boy. Our lives are crazy busy but if I don't take care of myself, I will die. So through my blog and the wonderful support of people who follow me, I am able to talk about my up's and down's and know that these people will encourage me all the while! It's fantastic!

Makayla, when I was your age I had the same problem, I would get home from school and turn on the TV and munch on whatever was in the house. Like you, I focused on losing the weight, and succeeded, only to gain it right back shortly after. Right now you should be focusing on WHY you eat. It sounds to me like you are bored, and possibly lonely. Eleven years old is a rough age, and mindlessly chowing down can make you feel better in the short term. What I suggest is that you find something to look forward to when you get home, something other than food. Find some way to treat yourself for surviving the day, something that will make you feel good about yourself. Being as young as you are, you will grow into your weight. This time in your life is a wonderful opportunity to decide who you are and who you want to be. You can decide if you want your weight to define you, or YOU to define you. Good luck!
